MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies prove that meditation (and yoga) does indeed transform circuits of the brain to increase functionality, focus, empathy, and happiness. Changes have been seen in the limbic system (brain’s emotional command center, which controls endocrine and autonomic nervous system), prefrontal cortex in charge of focus, thoughts and actions, and left-sides anterior region responsible for generating positive emotions.

Another interesting type of meditation which activates certain parts of the brain faster than silent meditation is called theta mediation. This requires the use of binaural beat technology to get your brain waves cycling at a certain frequency. Many consider this to be responsible for some of their most powerful experiences during mediation. While one’s brain waves are in theta frequency (4-7 Hz), deep mediation is induced. A good example to listen to experience this for yourself please click here. The best way to experience this sort of mediation is to use head phones, so any background noise is canceled out. Allow your mind to go blank and only focus on the sound.

There are other binaural beats at different wave frequencies that correspond to the alpha, beta, gamma, or delta range of brainwave frequencies aside from theta waves. A binaural beat is simply produced when one ear hears a difference of frequency up to 10 Hz from the other ear as it fluctuates back and forth. The list below shows what each wave is meant for:

Binaural Beats

In addition to lowering the brain frequency to relax the listener, there are other controversial uses for binaural beats. They may have the ability to stimulate certain glands to produce desired hormones. Beta-endorphin and dopamine has been activated in studies while using alpha-theta brain wave training. Reduced learning times and sleeping needs up to only 4 hours long has been seen after using theta binaural betas during meditation. Some people attempt to use this theta state to induce lucid dreaming and even for attempting out-of-body experiences, astral projection, telepathy, and psychokinesis. Alpha-theta brainwave training has been successfully used for the treatment of addictions. It has also been used to recover repressed memories and improve overall memory performance.
